Our Lord gives His Apostles advice that applies also to all of us: “Come away to a deserted place and rest for a while.” It has always been necessary for Christians to find time for silent meditation, both daily and on longer annual retreats. The argument could be made that it is
more necessary in our day in age than it has ever been, due to the constant noise and chaos with which we are surrounded, and the frenetic pace at which most people live on a day to day basis. It is literally impossible to hear the gentle voice of God when we are surrounded by noise, since external noise translates into internal noise and chaos. Our Lord does not compete with the cares of the world - He demands priority over them. We need to “reset” our souls and minds on a daily basis to make them fitting receptacles for God’s voice and grace. We do this by making a consistent effort
every day to make substantial time for prayer - to give God more time than we think we can “fit in” to our busy daily schedule. If we make Him the priority, He will give us more than we could ask or imagine.
